Parts of speech- IX std

                     Parts of speech 
Sentences,  clauses and phrases are made of words. According to these nature and function in the sentence, words are divided into the following eight classes are called parts of speech.

  • Noun
  • Pronoun
  • Adjective 
  • Verb
  • Adverb
  • Preposition 
  • Conjunction 
  • Interjection
Noun - name of a person, place or thing.
Eg: Gandhiji was the father of the nation.

Pronoun - a word used instead of a noun.
Eg: He is a good singer.

Adjective  - a word which qualifies a noun.
Eg: Sita is a clever girl

Verb - action or condition of the subject.
Eg: The sun sets in the west.

Adverb - a word that modifies a verb,  an adjective or an another adverb.
Eg: He ran very fast.

Preposition : a word that is usually placed before a noun or pronoun to show the latter's relation to some other word in the sentence.
Eg: I put it in the box.

Conjunction - a word used to join together words, phrases or clauses
Eg: He ate bread and butter.

Interjection - a word of exclamation, expressing a sudden feeling or excitement.
Eg: Oh!  I have lost my purse.

Exercise :

  1. Money is the root of all evil. - noun
  2. He is an honest man. - adjective 
  3. He sings well. - verb
  4. She speaks very fast. - adverb
  5. It looks beautiful .- pronoun
  6. She walks under the bridge -preposition .
